Sustainability a focus for Claremont Aquatic Centre

The Claremont community may have noticed some large crane works happening at the Claremont Aquatic Centre last week.

The pool’s geothermal heating system, which uses artesian water from 600m below ground to naturally heat the pool, had its four-yearly jetting works to clean the system.

The artesian water comes out of the ground at 43 degrees and heats the pool water to 28 degrees throughout the winter months.

Mayor Jock Barker said this project was further demonstration of the Town’s commitment to sustainability. “Sustainability is one of our key goals, and we keep that at the forefront of all decision making. This is the most environmentally friendly way of heating and saves more than 330 tonnes of greenhouse gases each year,” Mayor Barker said.

On top of using a sustainable heating system, Claremont Aquatic Centre has implemented a number of sustainable initiatives including having recirculated water used at the splash pad and a ‘borrow a lock’ system to complement their bike racks.

Mayor Jock Barker said the Town was focused on sustainability across all areas of the Town.

“It’s fantastic to see these initiatives come to fruition, which will make a real impact on reducing our
environmental footprint,” Mayor Barker said. “This is something that, as a Town, we are extremely mindful of.”

“We’re always looking at new initiatives and improvements that we can make around our community to be more sustainable for future generations,” he said.

For the fifth year running, the Aquatic Centre has been endorsed as a Waterwise Aquatic Centre in Water Corporation’s Waterwise Aquatic Centre Program.
