Town of Claremont is taking definitive steps towards energy savings as part of WALGA’s Sustainable Energy Project, one of the largest joint procurements of renewable energy in Australia by Local Government.
The WA initiative is the first renewable and carbon aggregation project approved by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission and provides scope for the sector to develop additional green energy projects.
Town of Claremont commenced its participation in the project on 1 April 2022 with five metered sites, that include the Council administration office and the Claremont Aquatic Centre.
The Town purchased Natural Power at the rate of 100% of consumption. The estimated CO2 Offset based on the Total Imported kWh was calculated at 109.91 Tonnes.
WALGA provided the Town of Claremont analysis to show that the initial reporting period exhibited a Sustainable Energy Project cost saving to the Town of 32% compared to current market pricing.
Mayor Jock Barker said the Town’s involvement with the project is in its beginning phases, however is already proving to create substantial savings of resources for residents.
“We are committed to sustainable energy at Town of Claremont and through the initiative we are providing a renewable energy option that promotes cost saving benefits to the Town and ratepayers,” he said.
“The first quarter results have shown us this project has the potential for significant savings, and along with our Sustainability Action Plan, we are moving towards a more sustainable future for our community.”
