A new piece of public art commissioned by the Town of Claremont was unveiled on Wednesday 8 November.
A new piece of public art commissioned by the Town of Claremont was unveiled on Wednesday 8 November. The sculpture, titled Tree of Wonder by local artists Anne Gee and Tony Pankiw, has been installed next to Teebox Café at the Lapsley Road entrance to Lake Claremont.
Tree of Wonder is described as a “silvery sculpture full of whimsy and enchanting characters reminiscent of Gee’s paper cut artworks”. The sculpture is a result of a collaboration between Gee and artist and sculptor Pankiw, who co-designed and created the 4.5m structure in his Perth based studio.
“I’m very excited to see this, my very first large-scale, public artwork come to life in the Claremont,” Anne Gee said.
“It was magical to work with Tony Pankiw as we translated my paper cut works into literally larger-than-life metal characters. The Tree of Wonder is a visual feast with stories woven throughout the branches.”
Pankiw said, “It’s been fun rendering Anne’s wonderful whimsical characters onto the branches and trunk of one of my trees – in this case the Tree of Wonder. I’m very honoured to be part of this collaborative public art sculpture in Claremont.”
The sculpture joins a long list of public art within the Town of Claremont and is part of the appealing public art trail through the Town.
Mayor Jock Barker says the Town’s variety of public art compliments the natural and architectural beauty of Claremont.
“Part of our role as a Council is to develop the public realm and provide spaces that inspire community participation, prosperity, and enjoyment. Our diverse range of public art is a huge contributor to this,” he said.
