Claremont Museum reopens

The redevelopment of the Claremont Museum has reached completion and will be open to visitors from 17 February. The redeveloped site, including a new community facility, will provide an improved experience for visitors, staff, volunteers, and the many artefacts that will be stored on site. 

The upgrade of the existing office building will feature a new ‘meet and greet’ area which will be the starting point for visitors when they arrive at the museum, providing them with a space to receive information about the museum, the temporary and permanent exhibitions on display, and to purchase Claremont Museum merchandise. 

A purpose-built collection management area has also been included to provide an efficient system for artefact management and preservation, and a refurbished education kitchen will provide school children with a light and bright space to enjoy a hands-on cooking experience.

The new Freshwater Gallery, with a contemporary design and views of the Swan River, will house exhibitions and support the educational programs, presentations, and historical talks.

Town of Claremont Mayor Jock Barker said the new facility would provide ways for the Town to connect and improved opportunities to collect, preserve and interpret the cultural heritage of Claremont and the Freshwater Bay area.

“Our vision for the museum is to create spaces that promote engagement and collaboration, responding to the needs of our growing community,” he said. 

“We want it to be a civic place for everybody, with an interesting mix of history and education and we have tried to capture all of these elements and celebrate them within the design concept,” Mayor Jock Barker said.
